Tasting Notes

***Barolo Tre Tine - 95 points***
The 2019 Barolo Tre Tine is elegant and gracious to the core. Lifted, sensual aromatics make a strong first impression. In most vintages the Tre Tine has been a bit more tannic, but the 2019 has a level of refinement that I have not seen in the past. Rose petal, kirsch, lavender, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and orange peel lend striking inner sweetness and perfume. The 2019 is classic in feel, but not at all forbidding or austere. I loved it. 2029-2049

***Barolo Brunate - 96 points***
The 2019 Barolo Brunate soars out of the glass with a dazzling array of dark, balsamic-infused aromas and flavors that are so typical of Brunate. Sage, menthol, melted road tar, lavender and dark plum all build in this rich and deeply textured Brunate. With superb balance, the Brunate is shaping up beautifully. There is an exotic wildness to the 2019 that is hard to fully capture in words. Here, too the tannins are present, but also very refined. Time in the glass releases the breadth of Brunate nicely. 2029-2059.

***Barolo Bussia – 97 points***
The 2019 Barolo Bussia, a new wine in this range, is fabulous. It is also a very serious, almost somber Barolo endowed with huge fruit and equally imposing tannins. Sage, mint, dried herbs, crushed leaves and spice lend compelling aromatic intensity to this deep, layered Barolo. Exotic hints of orange peel, spice and sweet dried cherry linger on the explosive, soaring finish. What I love most about the Bussia is its complexity. Each taste reveals a new shade of its glorious dimension as the 2019 builds into its seriously long, resonant finish. This is a tremendous debut from sisters Marta and Carlotta Rinaldi. 2029-2059

***Barolo Tre Tine - 97 points***
This stunning Barolo opens with enticing scents of baking spice, blue flower and perfumed berry. Structured but extremely elegant, the taut palate features juicy cherry, raspberry, cinnamon and ground clove alongside seasoned tannins. Drink 2025–2044.

***Barolo Brunate - 99 points***
Giuseppe Rinaldi’s 2019 Barolo Brunate is drop-dead gorgeous, with ripe raspberry, blood orange, licorice and tobacco framed in firm, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and lends youthful tension. It’s already utterly delicious but give it time to fully develop. Drink 2027–2049.

***Barolo Bussia - 99 points***
Giuseppe Rinaldi’s debut vintage of 2019 Barolo Bussia is the biggest and best news out of Barolo in years. It’s absolutely fantastic, with aromas of forest floor, balsamic sensations of camphor and ripe berry fruit that segue into botanical herb, licorice and raspberry compote on the palate. Hailing from the storied heart of the cru, in the area once called Bussia Sottana, it boasts an age-worthy structure and a natural concentration thanks to the advanced age of the vines planted in the 1940s. It’s still very young with racy tension but already balanced, with a backbone of firm tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2029–2049.
